My Best Beauty Discoveries of the Year!

Hi Everybody,

I hope you enjoyed the festive period and are ready to celebrate the New Year.

I decided to write about my best beauty discoveries of 2016. The products are not new products on the market but new to me. I have never tried these products before but now they are part of my go-to products and how they have made a difference to me. It’s so hard to keep up with new products but when you get around to buying products that have been around for awhile, you find that they are brilliant and you think ‘how did I not discover this earlier!’

All these I have reviewed in earlier posts.

All products I purchased myself.

This year I discovered Cream Blushes as I was worried if I could work with them and if they would look good on me.  I love the two cream blushers from Rosie for Autograph ‘Natures Blush’ &  Bobbi Brown Pot rouge for lips and cheeks ‘Powder Pink’. The formula of each of them is completely different from one another. The Rosie version is more velvety and the texture blends easily to a powder finish. The Bobbi Brown is more creamy and has a sticky feel to it. The result is a natural flush to the cheeks. Both are long lasting and easy to work with and I love them.

Benefit are a hit or miss company for me. Some good products but some disappointments too. This year they released new brow products. I tried 3 samples in 3 different magazines! Ready Set, Brow setting gel keeps the brows in place. Goof Proof Brow Pencil fills in the brow with the nicely angled tip. Gimme Brow is a volumizing fiber gel which fills in the gaps in your eyebrows and gives the brows a fuller look. I was very impressed by all three. They all lasted a long time and I loved how more defined my brows looked. They looked neater and fuller when I used them. Well worth buying the full size products.

I love lip products.  NYX Butter Gloss in ‘Strawberry Cheesecake’ is a creamy, long lasting lip gloss. Lip glosses are getting better and better. Better formula and so long lasting these days. Revlon Ultra HD Lip Colour ‘Devotion’ is a non-drying matte lip colour which is long lasting and looks just fantastic on the lips. The formula is superb. Matte and Shine lip glosses are fighting for supremacy and I loved both of these.

YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch.  One of the most iconic products in Make-up and one of the best. Nothing to add as it is already been said by countless people! Please read my YSL Touch Eclat post from August.

One Haircare product and that goes to Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oatmilk. It really works and so gentle  on the hair and the greasiness goes away too. No sickly scent either. 100% satisfaction with me.

Neal’s Yard Organic Make-up Remover is such a gentle remover of make-up. I have found that ‘natural’ products have difficulty in removing stubborn make-up sucth as mascaras. This one had no problem doing that and it also conditions your eye lashes as well. A winner in my book. I love cleansers and is one of the most important steps in skincare. Rodial’s Stem cell Cleansing Cream is a winner.  You also need a good scrub to remove dry patches and dull skin and Oskia’s Micro Exfoliating Balm does the job, 100% guaranteed. My husband loved it too! Once a week, you need to clean deep in the skin and remove the impurities and you need to use a masque. Exuviance Purifying Clay Masque has been a revelation to my skin. If you have problematic skin I can’t recommend this product enough, hugely impressed with this one.

After all the cleaning, you need to give back moisture and hydration, particular around the delicate areas around the eyes and I have been especially impressed by Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye. It gives you great hydration and helps keep these lines away! You can’t skip the serum and I have been loving the Balance Me Congested Skin Serum. Four bottles have been recycled and need to go and purchase another! It really works and keeps the breakouts under control and doesn’t dry the skin.

Two night creams, fighting for the glory of been the best but their both winners with me! Elemis Hydra-Nourish Night Cream and Garnier Miracle Sleeping Cream.  The Elemis left the skin is plumped, hydrated and re-balanced the skin. After waking up the next morning, I felt and saw the difference.  Elemis, I need a years’s supply of this stuff! The Garnier is as good in my view. My skin felt and looked hydrated, plump and with radiance. A great budget buy.

Have a Happy New Year and I hope 2017 brings lots of new products to try. Now to go sale hunting…

Sleek ‘Dancing Til Dusk’ Palette.

Hi Everybody,

Not so long ago, budget face palettes in the past were just awful. Low-quality products which were poorly pigmented and hard to work with to give you the look you wanted. Today you can find a variety of brands that offer quality palettes for little money and they  can be as good as the high-ends brands! The improvement in the formulas has been the main reason for the success of these smaller brands.

One of the brands that has shown that quality doesn’t have to cost the earth is Sleek. Their lines of eyeshadow palettes cost less than a tenner! I have a few palettes from Sleek and I have been my recently purchased ‘Dancing Til Dusk’ palette.

This is an eye and cheek palette which comes in a simple black packaging with a magnetic opening. The mirror inside is a nice large size. It has four eyeshadows: Two matte colours in a light brown and a chocolate brown and two shimmer colours which are a champagne colour and a chocolate brown. You can easily have a daytime and a smoky evening look with this palette. The two cheek blushes are a orange brick colour in a matte finish and a pink shimmery finish. They are very pigmented so you only need to use a very tiny amount on your cheeks. The eyeshadows are easy to blend, no fall-out and no fade as they are very pigmented as well.

Sleek eye shadow are fantastic value in my opinion. Professionals use their products so if pros like them you know they must be good. If you like to experiment with different colours and textures and don’t want to spend a lot of money, you wouldn’t go wrong to try Sleek and their eye shadows. I do like them too!

Cream Cleansers!

Hi Everybody,

There are so many different options to cleanse and remove our make-up. There are gels, oils, balms and creams. I have been trying different brands and different types to find the ones that work best for me.

I have mentioned the famous Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser before. You can see why it is so famous. It’s easy to use and is so effective in cleansing the face and not leaving it dry. The muslin cloth that is provided has also converted me into using a muslin cloth in my first step of cleansing!

Rodial Stem Cell Cleansing Cream is another I have mentioned in previous blog posts. It is a cream cleanser which you can also use as a mask if you have dehydrated skin. It is a wonderful product, leaving my skin clean, hydrated and glowing. I love it.

No7 Beautiful Skin Hot Cloth Cleanser follows in the same path as Liz Earle’s Hot Cloth Cleanser. You are provided with a muslin cloth and it is a huge 200ml bottle. One thing I do like is the pump action mechanism which sucks every last remnants of product out from the bottle! I tend to use one pump, sometimes a little more so that is enough to cleanse the face. It has a creamier texture than the Liz Earle version ( which has a thicker consistency) and has a subtle scent. I haven’t had any breakouts using it afterwards and didn’t dry the skin out. A very good budget option which holds its own against more expensive versions.

Ponds Cold Cream is a legendary product and I read in Sali Hughes’s description of it in her book ‘Pretty Iconic’ and it tempted me to try it.  I have always seen it on the shelf in Boots, picked it up and wondered if I should try it. It doesn’t come with a cloth and it is only 50ml in a small pot. It looks like a soft, light cream but it isn’t!  When you apply you will find it is a rich cream with an almost buttery, oily texture. It doesn’t rub easily into the skin and you feel that you need to use more of it because it doesn’t feel that it is moving around your skin. To remove I found that hot water wasn’t enough and you need to use a flannel or muslin cloth! If you have very dry skin you should buy this product. I did found that my skin was very smooth but I think it was slightly too rich for me. Bargain product without any doubt!

REN Rosa Centifolia Cleansing Gel is the only gel that I have used so far. It is a gel but when you massage it into your skin it develops into a slight creamy texture. You then rinse it off with warm water. It has a slight subtle scent of rose and I do like that. It feels so gentle on my skin, didn’t dry out and I didn’t develop any breakouts. My skin felt cleansed and refreshed afterwards. Any skin types can use this and it is a great everyday cleanser to remove your make-up.

There are so many other products and brands that do cleanser creams that I haven’t tried yet but they will have to be as good as the ones I have tried already!

On My Nails – Leighton Denny ‘Gem Stone Buzz’

Hi Everybody,

I had to paint my nails for the festive period. It could be red, burgundy and it must have glitter and sparkle too! I do like Leighton Denny nail polishes. The quality of the polishes are always excellent and the brushes are always good to use. The colours themselves are always well pigmented. This came as a freebie in a magazine and the colour is a beautiful wine red. It is a perfect festive shade I think.

I used Leighton Denny ‘One for All’ which is formulated as a base coat, top coat and ridge filler. I applied my usual 2 coats of colour and then finished the look with decorative rhinestones on each nail. I think it looks very festive and the rhinestones are a nice touch too! Of course you can easily re-create the look with any nail art rhinestones you have. It looks like I have diamonds on my nails!

My Year of Mascaras!

Hi Everybody,

Mascaras are one of the most difficult make up choices around. With so many different types of mascaras and what they can do, the choice is overwhelming. The brushes, the formulation, the textures, the price range. All make it difficult to find the elusive perfect mascara. Here are the mascaras I have used through 2016.

‘The all-right-but-nothing-special-mascaras’

MAC False Lashes Extreme Black Mascara was only a sample size to try the full size. Trying this sample size saved me from buying the full-size version! The bristle brush is quite thick and didn’t give me the false extreme lash look at all, only gave me a natural look to the lashes. Nothing WOW for me.

Benefit ‘They’re Real’ Mascara has a very spiky and plasticky brush and that spoils the effect of applying it onto the lashes. I accidentally poked my eye with it as it’s too spiky!  Through the day it eventually smudged and gave me the panda eye look! It did elongate and separate the lashes though.

Clarins ‘Wonder Perfect’ Mascara applies nicely, eyelashes look pretty but the downside is that it smudged through the day. Not a perfect mascara then. I also tried ‘Be Long’ Mascara but this also smudged on me! It did give a really nice effect but the smudging was very disappointing on these Clarins. Maybe the samples were faulty?

Laura Mercier ‘Full Blown Volume Supreme Lash Building’ Mascara wins the award for the longest name in Mascaras! This didn’t give the volume as it says but the lashes looked natural, elongated and separated and also didn’t smudge. For the price, it was a bit of let-down in my view and didn’t leave my lashes with the full blown effect as promised.

The best-of-the-rest-mascaras’

L’Oreal ‘False Lash Sculpt’Mascara has the weirdest, rubbery brush I’ve used on a mascara, the shape looks like a dragon’s head and small. But in spite of this, it gave my lashes the elongated and separated look I wanted. It didn’t smudge either and I was very impressed by this one and the price was good for under ten pounds. A great everyday mascara.

Rimmel ‘Volume Colourist’ Mascara has unusual squared off bristles but this obliviously helps the look as it separates and gives you volume to the lashes. It also has lash tint complex in it and the longer you use it, your lashes get darker. It did for me and I have been really happy to use this mascara.

Benefit ‘Roller Lash’ Mascara was a Benefit mascara I did use and liked a lot. The brush is so nicely curved and small. The rubber bristles are soft compared to the They’re Real’ mascara. It really opened the eyes, curled the lashes and separated them perfectly. I really liked this mascara.

Kevyn Aucoin ‘Essential’ Mascara has a slightly curved brush which makes it easier to apply onto the lashes and work into them. It also has ultra-soft fibres which blends into the lashes easily. A really nice mascara that delivers on volume and doesn’t clump the lashes. A true black mascara as well, like all the others.

It’s always good to experiment with mascaras, the different things they can achieve makes it interesting. The mascara is a competitive market and one mascara may be right for one person but not for somebody else. After all we humans are very picky!

On My Nails – All That Jazz ‘Jessica’s Suit ‘N’ Tie’

Hi Everybody,

I haven’t done a ‘On My Nails ‘ post for awhile so I thought I would post one! I love my nail painted but haven’t done so for a while..

All That Jazz have only been in the market since 2013 and I first spotted them at the beauty show at the Excel. I love trying new brands so I had to give them a go when I saw their range on their stand.

I don’t normally wear black nail polish but this colour called Jessica’s Suit’n’tie one stood out as you have fine glitter in random colours which I really like.

It applies easily as I always put two coats on my nails. I think this would suit a party/festive seasons as the glitter lifts it from the normal nail polishes.

It stays on the nails okay, I found it lasted three days on me before it started to chip. I also find it easy to remove from the chunky glitter polishes as it has fine glitter. If you don’t like black and what something different this polish could be for you!

November Favourites!

Hi Everyone,

The end of the year is almost upon us, where has the year gone? Is the year getting shorter! The one thing to remember is that they will be more beauty products to try!

As you know, I do like Weleda products and this month I have been using their Almond Sensitive Skin Body Wash. This is a creamy body wash but it’s the smell that hits you. It is a divine nutty scent. It feels like you are washing yourself in milk! This is a lovely product and quite reasonable in price too.

Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Body Scrub is a brown sugar with lime, almond oil and macadamia grains. It has a lovely sweet scent and the texture is sugary, sticky which rubs into the skin so good. It is also a big tub so it goes a long way and is reasonably priced too!

L’Occitane Supple Skin with Almond oil is a body oil (yes, another almond oil product!) which absorbs into the skin easily. No greasy feeling and my skin is so smooth and hydrated after using it.

Aurelia Firm & Revitalise Dry Body Oil is another oil I have used with impressive results. This was a sample size but I had enough for two uses. It is a herby scent but is pleasant and not overpowering. It sinks so quickly into the skin and the skin felt so smooth.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Microsmooth High Gloss Primer banishes frizz and creates shine to the hair. It also prevents damaging from heat styling. I have never tried this before and I have been impressed by it. I applied a few pumps onto the palm of my hand and worked it into my damp hair and then styled my hair with the hair dryer. It really did help keeping it glossy and straight.

I have been using Estee Lauder Perfectly Clean Triple Action Cleanser/Toner Makeup Remover as a cleanser. When I’m not wearing make-up and I wanted to cleanse my face I have been using this. It has a foamy texture so it works very well as a cleanser. It doesn’t dry out the skin and it gave the skin a squeaky clean feel.

Carita Ideal Hydratation Lagoon Scrub is a face scrub with sunflower seeds sweet almond oil and aloe vera. It is so gentle on the skin so softens and soothes the skin and the  skin felt it was glowing afterwards. This is an excellent product and would be good for all skin types.

Origins Renewing Serum with Willowherb has been a revelation to me. My blemishes calmed down after using it. I did some research on williowherb and found out that it has anti-bacterial activity that makes it an excellent choice for helping blemish prone skin. The cream-gel texture absorbs very quickly but does leave a very slight stickiness on the skin. My skin loves this stuff! no pores clogged and no breakouts.

I have really enjoyed Tanya Burr’s It’s Kissmas Lip Gloss Set. I do like the colours and the texture. For a lip gloss it is long-lasting on my lips. I particular enjoyed using Candy Cane, a lovely pink with added shimmer.  A well priced set.

Lancome Holiday Eye Shadow & Face Palette in ‘French Muse’ is not new but I have used this quite often this month as the shades are so autumnal/wintry. The eye shadow colours are perfect so you can use them for a nice daytime look or for an evening smoky look. The plum shade blusher is also a perfect colour to go with the eyeshadows.  Typical Lancome quality.

I do love my scarves. They are perfect to under a statement to your wardrobe. As winter is now with us, I am now enjoying the scarves I bought in Edinburgh. I have always wanted to buy tartan pattern scarves and I bought two. The traditional red tartan and a lovely  light pink tartan. Both are lambs wool so soft and warm. I also picked one tartan scarf for my husband!

I did pick up from the National Portrait Gallery website, the Vogue make-up bag which is perfect in my handbag. I keep my lipsticks and lip glosses in there so I don’t have to rummage around the handbag looking for them!
